This year's installment of the Metropolitan Soccer League indoor session has come and gone with the newly found squad's results proving impressive. The majority of the team had not played more than a few weeks together before January 6th's opening game versus Polonia.
The idea of infusing youth and previous club members back into the first team side has proven itself challenging but when all was said and done, successful. Finishing the season with a record of 3 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties gave us 11 points and a 6th spot in the table. In addition, although we recorded 4 losses, we started the season challenging for the title, not having lost a match until week 5. We earned the respect of the league while using a very different lineup from years past.
Week 1: Schwaben 3 - Polonia 1 (1-0-0)
We literally shocked the league and Polonia fans during this game as nobody expected the dominating performance given. We held 3-0 until the last min.
Week 2: Schwaben 1 - United Serbs 1 (1-0-1)
The eventual indoor champions scored first in this battle. The Serbs' goal came at the end of the first half. A good half-time speech by Coach Dallas and some pressure later, we equalized with 12 minutes remaining. Credit to the Serbs' keeper thereafter as he made no less than 6 great saves to give the Serbs the tie. We played so well and felt as if we had won.
Week 3: Schwaben 3 - VIkings 3 (1-0-2)
This game featured grit and determination. Vikings have done the same as us this year, rebuilding with youth. After taking a 1-0 lead, we conceded 3 straight goals. The last 10 minutes were an uphill battle eventually ending in two goals by our side. Good to see that we could accomplish this task. If the game had been 3 minutes longer we might have gone on to win.
Week 4: Schwaben 4 - Wings 1 (2-0-2)
Wings are a team that will come at you with a continual brute force. It was a game, however, that we needed to have in the "W" column. Teams such as Wings, even though they finish at the bottom of the table a lot, present just as bad of a problem as the Eagles and Serbs of the league. The game was very physical with many 2-minute (blue cards) penalties handed out by the
officials. In the end our skill and organization was too much for the Wings as we need not score for the final 10 minutes, still obtaining the victory.
Week 5: Schwaben 0 - Eagles 5 (2-1-2)
A total breakdown: Line changes were not fluid, passes were not made, and heads were not thinking. We had a chance to solidify our spot atop the table in front of larger-than-normal crowd but "choked." Nothing went right in this match. It was to be a focused week of training.
Week 6: Schwaben 3 - Lions 0 (3-1-2)
Back to the form we started the season with. This victory helped us forget about the Eagles match.
Week 7: Schwaben 1 - Zirinski 2 (3-2-2)
Not the best performance of the season but not our worst either. We had many opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. After not doing so, we left the door for defeat open. Zirinski walked through that door with 3 minutes left proving that every match within the MSL is a tough one.
Week 8: Schwaben 2 - Maroons 3 (3-3-2)
This was the beginning of the end for us this session. Maroons were facing relegation with a loss to us. We wanted to hand them their almost certain doom, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. The lead made us play comfortable and relaxed soccer. This was not a good sign of things to come as Maroons slid one home just before the half to make it 2-1. They went on to have a stellar second half, as we could never turn on our engines again, scoring 2 more goals to avoid the bottom of the table (at least for one more week) winning 3-2.
Week 9: Schwaben 2 - Sockers 4 (3-4-2)
We went down 2-0 quickly as it seemed that nobody had interest in playing this game. Resurgence, motivated by Coach Dallas, pushed us to equalize before the half. We started out with a furious pace in the second half but our chances were equaled by the Sockers' keeper. And after our pace dropped a bit, Sockers saw the opportunity to capitalize. They put 2 more balls in the back of the net winning 4-2.
It was a good season for the club. We would like to thank all of the member and supporters for coming out and spending their time backing us. As it stands our first MSL outdoor game of the Spring half is the first Sunday in April away against United Serbs. I hope that we can go 2 for 2 in outdoor against the first place side.
